Allen Foster, CPBA
The merger of McNutt & Associates, Inc. with Cortex Leadership Consulting, created an opportunity to expand the consulting work Allen Foster had been doing with clients for more than 15 years in the areas of marketing strategies, advertising, and public relations. As President of the boutique advertising agency, McNutt & Associates, Inc., Allen managed more than $5 million a year for clients like Rappaport Management Group who owns shopping centers like Towers Shopping Center, Central Park in Fairfax, VA, and more than 20 others, along with Virginia Furniture Market, Simpson Funeral Home, Altizer & Altizer Law Firm, Home Instead Senior Care and many others.
Allen spent the first 10 years of his career in retail management for giants (at that time … he’s old now) K-Mart and Staples, eventually rising to be one of the youngest store managers in the Staples chain. Allen was charged with multi-million renovation projects and new store openings as the operations management of stores ranging from $2M – $10M in annual sales.
As the President of Cortex, Allen serves clients through consulting sessions focused on marketing, advertising and optimizing onboarding success of new hires, along with co-facilitating select leadership workshops on DISC – he is a Certified Professional Behaviors Analyst (CPBA) through Target Training International – and the Currency of Trust. He remains an experienced and trusted media buyer for some Cortex clients.
Allen graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. He is married to Lynda McNutt Foster (Cortex’s CEO) and father to Melody McNutt. He is a trivia wiz, a serious fan of Virginia Tech football, avid reader of books on history and science, and frequently can be found with Lynda walking or running on the Roanoke Greenway.
David DeHaven, PhD
With a background of over 20 years of corporate, consulting and coaching experience, David provides training as well as individual and group coaching in the areas of Leadership, Change Management, Business Strategy, Business Development, Personal Development, and Improved Performance. He has worked with many clients to achieve success, wealth, and balance.
In addition to training and coaching, David is an accomplished executive with extensive experience in information systems, IT infrastructure and consulting services. Over his career David has held several executive positions including Dean, School of Business and Management for Argosy University, Dean, School of Information Systems & Technology for Kaplan University, Chief Technology Officer for Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector, Chief Information Officer for CMR Institute, Intelligence Operations Director for Northrop Grumman TASC, Partner with Greenwich Technology Partners, and Vice President with First Union National Bank.
David holds a Doctorate in Organization and Management, Master’s Degrees in Business Administration and Psychology, along with Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Health and Wellness . He is also a certified Master NLP Practitioner and Buzan™ Licensed Instructor. David’s PhD program and dissertation research focused on leadership for the 21st century knowledge age organization, servant leadership, and the role of culture and change management in supporting IT initiatives. David’s trainings are a blend of valuable insights, practical tips & tricks, feedback on own effectiveness but most of all, they are entertaining and thought provoking.
Senior Consultant/Performance Coach
Bud is a performance Coach and the creator of The NeuroPower Academy and the concept of “Leveraging Your Minds Infinite Potential”.
Bud is a native of Bluefield, VA. After graduating from high school, he attended Bluefield College and Emory & Henry College, earning degrees in history and psychology.
In 1985, Bud graduated from Radford University with a Master of Science degree in industrial/organizational psychology. Shortly after graduate school, he was published in two psychology journals for his research in personnel selection.

Following graduate school, Bud worked for a year as a plant personnel manager in Harrisonburg. Following that, he was a Personnel Officer for the Norfolk Southern Corporation where he earned the Professional in Human Resource Management (PHR) accreditation. After leaving the railroad Bud spent the next twenty-five years in the insurance industry, where he won national awards as an agent, sales manager, branch manager, trainer and coach.
Bud helps leaders and their sales teams more quickly reach the milestones towards their desired outcomes. He will be working with Lynda to co-create Cortex Courses that use the power of our mind and brain to more quickly create the types of habits that lead to reaching your potential.
Ken has made a career out of leading change in one of the toughest environments to do it in, local government. Ken’s biggest strength proved to be his ability to navigate the politics of different initiatives while maintaining the tenacity and focus on the things that would matter most to the “customers” of the City – the citizens. His understanding and experience in effective communication and team building lead to forward momentum towards the change his region needed to see.
As the Director of General Services/Sustainability, Ken was responsible for a budget in excess of $14 million with a staff of 100. In this role, Roanoke reduced energy consumption by 16 percent between 2009 and 2015. This initiative was recognized by the US Department of Energy in 2015 as part of their Better Buildings Challenge.
For more than 17 years Ken was responsible for a broad range of human resources and risk management functions as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Roanoke. He took the lead on major changes to the human resource function at the City by establishing a pay-for-performance employee evaluation system and by establishing an on-site physician program that helped stabilize health care costs. He won the 2005 ICMA Program Excellence Award for Innovations in Local Government with his white paper, “Managing the Rising Cost of Health Care”.
Some of Ken’s major accomplishments include: development of strategic plans for each division; improved long-term strategies to save energy and provide environmentally responsible facilities; establishment of a properly sized fleet; implementation of a vendor self-service automated system; development of methods to increase small and locally owned businesses in the purchasing process; improved efficiency and effectiveness of the risk management program; establishment of the Citizens Green Academy. Through the Virginia Municipal League, Ken provided state-wide training to local governments regarding carbon reduction strategies.
Other awards include winner of the inaugural Virginia Municipal League’s Green Government Challenge with Platinum awards in subsequent years; national recognition by Office Depot with the Green Purchasing Award for sustainable purchasing; recognition by the Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition as the outstanding local government official, 2009.
Ken holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration degree, Bachelor of Arts in History, and has attended countless, robust, leadership training programs from established institutions like the University of Virginia and Cornell University.
Ken is an experienced in Executive Level Coaching and has the experience in leading along with leadership training that any size organization can benefit from.
Senior Leadership Consultant/Coach
Dale brings his senior leadership experience in the US Army and in the manufacturing sector to his work in training and coaching front line leaders.
Dale is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also is a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional and has given several front line leadership workshops at the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Profession conferences.
While in the Army, Dale began his career as an infantry officer stationed in Kansas. He held positions of platoon leader, executive officer, liaison officer and Headquarters executive officer. He deployed and served for the 1st Infantry Division in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His awards include the bronze star and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. After this conflict, Dale became an Army Ordnance officer and attended the officer’s advance course in Maryland.
After exiting the Army, Dale held positions of Maintenance Supervisor, Manufacturing Leader, Engineer, Facilities Manager and Maintenance and Engineering Manager. These industries included fiber optic, heavy truck frame rail, wood cabinetry and articulating aerial device manufacturing. Dale has proven leadership experience in both union and non-union workforce organizations.
During his time in industry, Dale has been responsible for implementing lean manufacturing principles including value stream mapping, kaisen principles and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). He also implemented maintenance programs in two different organizations that directly lead to increased uptime in the process. Dale also successfully implemented different types of projects across these organizations totaling over $50M.
Dale’s experience as a management and leadership consultant and coach has included the Canadian Oil Sands of western Canada that produced an increase in Heavy Haul Truck availability of 10%, reduction in mean time to repair (MTTR) by 18%, and increased mean time between failure (MTBF) by 8%. Also, during that time, through Dale’s competent leadership coaching, the reliability and maintenance engineering departments achieved an output efficiency increase of nearly 20%.
In addition, Dale conducting management and leadership coaching in the potash mining industry of central and western Canada. This resulted in an increase of mill production availability of over 8% and a decrease in unplanned maintenance activities of over 30%. In addition, capital expenditure projects for the client site became properly managed and executed to a success rate of over 95%.
Dale has the necessary proven leadership coaching abilities that produce positive and sustainable results in today’s continually changing business environments.
Jen holds certificates from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. She has a Master’s degree in Counselor Education from Virginia Tech and an undergraduate degree in Communications and Spanish from James Madison University. Jen was born in the US but spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Latin America. She is fluent in Spanish and has experienced firsthand the cost and benefit of adapting to multiple cultures.
Jen works with our clients to strengthen their organization’s systemic capacity for navigating conflict and change. She designs curriculum and facilitates workshops, classes, retreats, and coaching sessions to help groups and individuals narrow the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
Jen’s training is deeply rooted in the Adaptive Leadership framework. As Assistant Director of the Batten Leadership Institute, she was integral to the infusion of Adaptive Leadership theory and practice through curriculum design and delivery. She has worked nationally and internationally as a leadership consultant and coach and has taught multiple workshops for the International Leadership Association and the Association for Leadership Educators.
Courtland James, CPBA
Courtland has shifted his focus from leading and training some of the most motivated, disciplined, and intelligent teams in the military, to developing leaders and teams in business and civilian organizations. His experiences as a Marine Corps Tank Officer have shaped him into an advanced, forward-thinking leader who is constantly asking the question, “What can we do better?”
At age 22, Courtland endured the most grueling and intensive leadership training in the world during his 3-month initiation into the Marine Corps at Officer’s Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. At 24, Courtland led a tank platoon on over 100 combat missions in Afghanistan, always achieving the two primary objectives of every Marine Corps unit – “mission accomplishment” and “troop welfare.” At 26, he designed and implemented a comprehensive annual training program that set the current standard by which his unit’s Anti-Tank Missile Platoon is trained. These, and the many other experiences leading and training Marine Corps combat units, give Courtland a unique perspective on the leadership challenges today’s millennial business leaders face in their organizations and an effective framework from which to draw to develop solutions to overcome them.
Courtland earned his executive coaching certification from the Center for Executive Coaching, is a Certified Professional Behaviors Analyst (CPBA) through Target Training International, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Virginia Tech. He has also completed some of the most challenging leadership training programs the military has to offer. These include the Marine Corps Officer’s Candidate Course, Basic Officer’s Course, and Fire Support Coordination Center Course and the US Army’s Armor Basic Officer Leader’s Course, Airborne Course, and Army Reconnaissance Course.
Currently a Captain in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Courtland continues to serve in the position of Tank Company Executive Officer with Alpha Company, 4th Tank Battalion. His professional awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon for meritorious combat service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
