As you launch into 2017, do you know the principles and practices that you will follow to be successful this year? One of my favorite series on YouTube is by Evan Carmichael who does the 10 Rules to Success series with celebrities and leaders most of us have heard of. My all time favorite is Will Smith’s top 10.
Recently, I discovered one by Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why. My favorite on his list was: #7 Be the last to speak…Sinek talks about the importance of rounding in meetings and being sure that you get the proper amount of feedback before you throw your opinion in the ring.
Here are Simon’s top 10 rules for success:
These videos are usually about 15 minutes long. This one is extended because Evan chose to playback much of Simon’s original TED Talk from the Start With Why concept. You can get the meat of the concepts in the first 15 minutes or so.
- Break the rules
- Train your mind
- Be patient
- Take accountability
- Outdo yourself
- Stack the deck
- Be the last to speak
- Be authentic
- Find your passion
- Start with Why
The more clear you are about what your principles are and how you will practice them the easier it will be for those that report and work with you to predict your behaviors and count on you for sound decision making.
TEAM EXERCISE:
At your team meeting this week, ask each member to contribute one rule for success for your team to follow this year. What is their favorite from something they have read or watched in the last year? What would one of their personal ones be?
Their contributions could be enlightening to understand what is most important to each member and will help build your team’s unity and purpose.
