If you’ve attended a workshop, breakout session, keynote speech or the Cortex Leading a Winning Team program you’ve probably participated in an interactive coaching tool known as Monti.
Monti is a system of coaching support only available through Cortex Leadership Consulting. Monti was designed to support the learning and implementation of principles and practices taught in Cortex workshops, training, and coaching sessions. People who use Monti have been curious about why and how it was developed.
Lynda McNutt Foster created and designed the Monti experience to support her clients through their behavior change prompted by training and coaching sessions they were attending. The science behind Monti is based on extensive research that was released in a book entitled Make It Stick, The Science of Successful Learning. The book explains the most effective ways they found for retaining what you learn.
Below is the 8-minute video summary of the book. It’s worth the time to watch as it will provide you with the latest techniques you need to know on how to make whatever you are coaching or teaching others, or want to learn yourself, to “stick” longer.
Here are some key takeaways from the book, Make It Stick:
Re-reading is the least effective way (except of course not doing anything) to long term retention of information you want to learn.
The three things, from their extensive research on people wanting to retain information most effectively, are:
- Forced Retrieval: Self Quiz – without looking at your notes first. The harder you have to work at retrieving the information the more you will retain.
- Interleaving: Don’t master one thing at a time. Interleave different types of information at the same time for the brain to make necessary connections between the items you are learning.
- Spaced effort:
Repitition , over time, in small doses, works much better than large doses that are difficult to process. - Stop and a
sk yourself these questions while you are in the middle of learning something new: What are the key ideas? What are new ideas I can think of now that I know this? How can I use what I am learning.
Thus, that is why Monti was born. Monti was designed by its founder, Lynda McNutt Foster, to motivate, monitor, and measure the progress of people through the learning and coaching sessions and track how they were using what they learned in their workplaces. To date, more than 10,000 people have experienced a relationship with Monti with a more than 50% engagement rate!
