Curious about working with us?
Here are some questions that may help you begin to get an idea of the kinds of things we’re curious about when we work with you and your organization.
1. How much time have you invested in Quadrant II thinking in the last 30-60 days (you remember Eisenhower’s time theory – of course most people think Covey developed it – Quadrant II is urgent, but really important)?
_____ developing and refining your vision
_____ developing your team
_____ developing yourself as a leader
_____ on your mental and physical self
2. If members of your team were asked how supported they feel by you which average number do you think they would give you from 1-10? (1 being not at all with 10 being VERY)
3. Thinking back on the last 5 years, which major problems were you able to solve in a way that you and your organization thought significantly moved things forward?
4. Which results have you been responsible for that have positively effected the highest level desired outcomes of the organization?
5. What practices do you use consistently to obtain different perspectives from team members and others for things that will or are affecting them?
There’s a reason I’m asking these specific questions. Research conducted and released by McKinsey & Company, which is a mega consulting firm that spends over $400 million a year on leadership and organization research like this, reported that there are 20 key leadership behaviors:
1. Be supportive
2. Champion desired change
3. Clarify objectives, rewards, and consequences
4. Communicate prolifically and enthusiastically
5. Develop others
6. Develop and share a collective mission
7. Differentiate among followers
8. Facilitate group collaboration
9. Foster mutual respect
10. Give praise
11. Keep group organized and on task
12. Make quality decisions
13. Motivate and bring out best in others
14. Offer a critical perspective
15. Operate with strong results orientation
16. Recover positively from failures
17. Remain composed and confident in uncertainty
18. Role model organizational values
19. Seek different perspectives
20. Solve problems effectively
Further research by McKinsey and Company from 81 organizations located throughout the world, indicated the top 4 behaviors that create 89% of the results for successful organizations are:
- Be supportive
- Operate with strong results orientation
- Seek different perspectives
- Solve problems effectively
When deciding on which coaching and training program is best for you and your leadership teams, focusing on these four behaviors could save you a great deal of time and development dollars.
Using the science of DISC behavioral style and motivator assessments along with the Cortex Team Strength Identifier questionnaire, you will be able to quickly see which strengths your leaders have naturally that can help determine which of the 4 successful behaviors they may be great at and which they need to develop.
We believe that a leader must first possess these core competencies in order to execute the top 4 leadership behaviors successfully:
- Building and maintaining trust
- Effectively designing their time for you and their organization’s highest level outcomes
- Obtaining knowledge and understanding of their industry, organization, and the departments they serve
- Developing a clear vision based on identifiable, organizational, and personal values
Human doings AND beings
Managing is about how effective you are at doing tasks and managing projects and systems. When you are leading, it is important that you understand your team’s perception of who you are and what you stand for. When your actions are out of alignment with who you say you are or ask others to be, yellow flags arise within your team and slow down forward momentum.
Your team must trust you to be reliable and competent. They must agree with the standards you set for them, feel like you are attuned to their needs and desires, and believe you manage your time effectively for the greater good of the organization. Perhaps most importantly, the people who you serve as their leader need to feel like you care about each of them on the team and the organization.
Without those factors in place, trust is not built or quickly erodes. Without trust, effective communication does not occur and the execution of any of the 4 key behaviors can’t happen in a way that will move the organization forward.
If you are stuck right now, or your leaders are, one of the core competencies is probably missing for them or within your organization. To get the ship moving again, or to start it from the shoreline, you’ll need to take a few steps:
- Learn the strengths of your leaders through assessments, based on proven science, so you can utilize them to build the culture you envision for your organization.
- Determine which leaders, beginning at the top, will have the most impact and influence on the people in your organization that can effect change the most.
- Discover which of the top 4 successful leadership behaviors each of those leaders are executing consistently and which ones they are not.
Now, you will have a very clear set of data points that will allow you to determine the next steps you need to take to reach your desired outcomes for your organization.
